Drying towers and columns are used to purify or dry common laboratory gases such as nitrogen or hydrogen. In typical laboratory use they are filled with a dry dessicant material such as KOH, activated molecular sieves, or calcium chloride and then the gas is slowly flowed through the tower.

Fractionating Column
A tall, horizontally subdivided container for fractional distillation in which vapour passes upwards and condensing liquid flows downwards. The vapour becomes progressively enriched in more volatile components as it ascends, and the less volatile components become concentrated in the descending liquid, which can be drawn off.

Gas Washing Bottle
A gas washing bottle consists of a (usually) cylindrical bottle/flask with a female ground glass joint, where a specialized male ground glass joint stopper with two glass tubes can be attached. The stopper has two external glass tubes, one enters the stopper from one side, taking a 90° angle and extends until near the bottom of the flask, while the other is connected directly to the stopper.
